Gary Farlow

My name is Gary K. Farlow and for me, art is about an escape from the brutal world of prison. My late father was an architect and from an early age I have been drawing, my choice of medium being color pencil.

Color pencil allows me to include the little details: items in a shop window or parted curtains revealing Victorian furnishings. My choice of urban landscapes as a primary focus is owing to the influence of my dad's profession. I find cities fascinating and historic structures possess a beauty all their own.

Proceeds from my art will fund the pursuit of my MFA. Education is the key to the future and upon release from prison, I, like most former prisoners, must face the social stigma of being an “ex-con.” My MFA will go a long way in my transition to free society.

In addition to my art, I also write poetry and my first volume of poetry, Fragments of a Dream, is on Amazon KDP. My hobbies include cooking, classical and New Age music, cats and I am an avid reader.

I hold a Bachelor of Arts from Western Illinois University in liberal studies. My writings include pieces in Chicken Soup for the Prisoner Soul, Chicken Soup for the Volunteer’s Soul, Chicken Soup for the African-American soul, as well as in Serving Time - Serving Others and Serving Productive Time.

My books include “The Cellblock Gourmet” and “Doing Time” published by The Graduate Group; “Fragments of a Dream” (poetry), “Porches, Pudding and Persimmons” (short creative nonfiction), “Prison-ese: A Guide to Prison Slang,” all published by Living with Conviction Press and available on Amazon. My first novel is a trilogy; “The Band,” “The Berry Thief,” and “The Warden,” due out summer, 2023.

My art is on display with The Justice Art Coalition, Prisoner Express/ Durland Library at Cornell University, the Safe Streets Art Foundation and of course, here. I hope you enjoy my work.
